India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods like medicines, some foods), 12% (processed foods, computers), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury/sin goods like cars, cigarettes, ACs).
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally between Central (CGST) and State (SGST) governments. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is levied by the Centre and then shared with the destination state.
Most services are taxed at 18% GST. Some services like healthcare, education, and certain banking services are exempt. Financial services and insurance attract 18%, while life insurance has a complex blended rate.
Businesses with annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for special category states) must register for GST. For service providers, the threshold is ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for special states).
Under RCM, the recipient of goods/services pays GST instead of the supplier. It applies in specific cases — like services from unregistered suppliers or for certain specified services like legal services, GTA transport.
