Frequently Asked Questions
NPS (National Pension System) is a government-sponsored retirement savings scheme open to all Indian citizens aged 18–70. It has two tiers: Tier 1 (primary, lock-in till 60) and Tier 2 (voluntary, no lock-in). Central and state government employees are mandatorily enrolled.
NPS offers exceptional tax benefits: ₹1.5L under Section 80CCD(1) within the 80C limit + an exclusive additional ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B). Employer contributions up to 10% of Basic+DA under 80CCD(2) are also deductible. Total potential deduction: ₹2L+.
At maturity (age 60), you must use at least 40% of the corpus to purchase an annuity from an empanelled insurance company. The annuity provides a monthly pension for life. The remaining 60% can be withdrawn tax-free as a lump sum.
Yes. Partial withdrawal (up to 25% of own contributions) is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes — higher education, home purchase, critical illness, or business startup. Premature exit before 60 requires 80% corpus to be annuitized.
PFRDA-registered fund managers include SBI, LIC, UTI, Kotak, HDFC, ICICI, Aditya Birla, and Axis. Historically, Tier 1 equity (E) schemes have delivered 12–15% CAGR. You can switch fund managers once per year for free.
